5 escapades nature à faire depuis Neuchâtel

5 Nature Getaways from Neuchâtel

Neuchâtel is the perfect place to slow down – with its lakeside setting, historic centre and wooded hills. But it’s also an ideal base for day trips into nature. Whether you’re after a peaceful walk, a proper hike or a spectacular view, these five experiences are all within an hour’s reach by car or train. Perfect for adding a few extra days to your stay – or discovering Switzerland differently.

1. Sunrise at the Creux du Van

A regional classic – but still a stunner. The Creux du Van is a natural rock amphitheatre, often called the “Swiss Grand Canyon”, perched at over 1,400 metres. Early morning is the best time to go: start in Noiraigue, walk up through the forest, and arrive at the cliff edge before the crowds.

The view stretches across the Val-de-Travers, the Bernese Alps and Lake Neuchâtel. You might spot ibexes, marmots or chamois. Solid walking shoes and a packed breakfast recommended.

👉 Getting there: 30-min train from Neuchâtel to Noiraigue, then a 2–2.5 hour hike.

2. The Areuse Gorges

Carved by the Areuse river, this gorge is one of the canton’s most scenic walking routes. The trail follows the water through moss-covered cliffs, over old bridges and past waterfalls – cool and shady in summer.

The walk from Boudry to Noiraigue takes 2 to 3 hours. With train stations at both ends, the journey back is easy.

👉 Tip: plan a lake swim in Colombier after the walk.

3. Val-de-Travers and the Absinthe Trail

This valley has a character of its own – wide landscapes, steep cliffs, forests and sleepy villages. It’s also the birthplace of absinthe. Several well-marked trails explore this heritage, from the spirit’s origins to its modern revival.

On the “In the Footsteps of Absinthe” trail, you’ll reach a working distillery. Even without hiking boots, the train ride alone is worth it for the views.

👉 Highlight: Visit the Maison de l’Absinthe in Môtiers – and try a tasting.

4. The Chasseral – Peak of the Bernese Jura

Just an hour from Neuchâtel, the Chasseral is one of the Jura’s most iconic peaks. From its ridge, you can see lakes, the Swiss Plateau and, on a clear day, the Alps.

Start walking from Nods or Les Prés-d’Orvin. For a gentler visit, drive up to the Hôtel du Chasseral. In summer, wildflower meadows and free-roaming cows set the tone – pure Jura charm.

👉 Ideal for a full-day hike or a golden-hour viewpoint.

5. The wild shores of Lake Biel

Only 30 minutes from Neuchâtel, Lake Biel is home to quiet trails, vineyards and shady paths. The northern shore between Twann and La Neuveville is particularly peaceful.

Perfect for cycling, walking or taking a silent boat ride. You’ll find small, uncrowded spots to swim and picnic.

👉 Pro tip: walk one way along the lake and return by boat.

Neuchâtel: Your Peaceful Summer Base

With all these getaways nearby, Neuchâtel is the perfect base. Stay at the Hôtel Beaulac by the lake and enjoy the best of both worlds: lake-view rooms, a panoramic rooftop, a refined Asian restaurant and direct access to the promenade.
