When staying in Neuchâtel, it is impossible not to notice the castle rising above the rooftops. Perched on the hill that dominates the old town, the Château de Neuchâtel has shaped the identity of the canton for more than a thousand years.
If you are planning a visit between April and September 2026, this is the ideal time to explore one of the region’s most significant historic monuments. To make the most of your stay, consider booking your room at Hôtel Beaulac. Located directly on the lakeshore and just a short walk from the historic centre, the hotel provides the perfect base for discovering Neuchâtel. Reservations can be made directly via beaulac.ch, under the Booking section.
The Origins of Neuchâtel
The Château de Neuchâtel was first erected at the end of the 10th century. Around this fortified structure, the town gradually developed, expanding from a defensive stronghold into the city we know today.
Over the centuries, the castle was extended and adapted. Its pale stone façades, towers and elevated position give it a distinctive presence. From the esplanade, visitors enjoy sweeping views across the rooftops of the old town, Lake Neuchâtel and, on clear days, the Alps in the distance.
Today, the château houses the seat of the cantonal government. It remains a working institutional building while preserving its historical character and architectural integrity.

A Panoramic View Across City, Lake and Alps
Even outside visiting hours, the esplanade remains accessible at all times. Many visitors choose to walk up in the late afternoon, when the light softens and highlights the façades of the old town.
From this vantage point, the geography of Neuchâtel becomes clear: the medieval centre below, the lake stretching out towards the horizon, and the Alpine skyline in the distance.
After your visit, it takes only a few minutes to walk back down into the historic centre and towards the lakeside promenade.
The Collegiate Church and the Walkway Around the Castle
The Château de Neuchâtel forms an architectural ensemble with the neighbouring Collegiate Church, another key landmark of the city. Together, they create one of the most recognisable historic silhouettes in the region.
A recently developed walkway along the hillside allows visitors to circle the château and appreciate different perspectives over the town and the lake. This route complements the guided visit and provides further insight into the site’s strategic position.
Planning Your Stay in Neuchâtel
Visiting the Château de Neuchâtel in spring or summer 2026 is an excellent opportunity to discover the city’s cultural heritage. Rather than limiting your experience to a few hours, consider extending your visit into a full weekend.
By staying at Hôtel Beaulac, you benefit from a central lakeside location with easy access to the old town and the castle. The promenade, shops and restaurants are within walking distance.
Begin your morning with a stroll along the lake before heading up to the château. In the evening, return to a peaceful setting overlooking the water.
To plan your stay around the guided tours of the Château de Neuchâtel (April to September 2026), we recommend booking your room in advance via beaulac.ch, under the Booking section.
