Neuchâtel Castle: History, guided visits and your stay in Neuchâtel

Just a short walk from Lake Neuchâtel, perched on a rocky outcrop, Neuchâtel Castle captures the imagination with its rich history and impressive silhouette. This emblematic monument gave the city its name and remains one of its most iconic landmarks.

Today, the castle still houses the cantonal government while welcoming thousands of visitors each year, drawn to its medieval architecture, the adjacent Collegiate Church and breathtaking views over the region.

A castle with over 1,000 years of history

The origins of Neuchâtel Castle date back to the early 11th century. In 1011, Rudolf III of Burgundy donated this “new castle” (Novum Castellum) to his wife — a name that would eventually give birth to the city’s own. Thanks to its strategic position overlooking the lake, the castle became an important fortress for centuries.

Over time, it changed hands many times — noble families, French dukes and Prussian kings each leaving their mark. In 1848, with the creation of modern Switzerland, the castle became the property of the canton. Some of its medieval towers, built before the year 1000, still stand today as witnesses to its remarkable past.

Unique architecture and an exceptional panorama

The architectural ensemble combines Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles, reflecting centuries of transformations. The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, next to the castle, was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Its elegant façade and Gothic cloister are among the most remarkable in western Switzerland.

From the castle terrace, visitors can enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city and Lake Neuchâtel. The gardens, inner courtyard and towers offer a real journey back in time. The site is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
